Manchester United officially announced that Ruben Amorim has stepped down from his position as the club's manager, with Darren Fletcher named as the interim boss.

Despite the sacking of Ruben Amorim, Marcus Rashford and other members of Man Utd’s outcast quartet are unlikely to make a return to Old Trafford.

Rashford, along with his teammates Jadon Sancho, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana, were all allowed to leave on loan during Amorim’s 14-month tenure, which came to an end on Monday.

The decision to loan these players out was not made by Amorim alone, so his departure is unlikely to bring about any major changes.

A source said, “These decisions were made by the club, not the manager.”

Rashford scored against Ipswich Town in Amorim’s first game in charge back in November 2024, but he quickly fell out of favour afterwards.

The following month, he was left out of the matchday squad for the derby against Man City, and Amorim also criticised his performances.

He even claimed that he would rather field his goalkeeping coach if players “could not give their all every single day”.

The 28-year-old Rashford was initially loaned to Aston Villa in the January transfer window before joining Barcelona last summer, with the Catalan giants activating his buyout clause for around £30 million.

In Spain, he has rediscovered his form, netting 7 goals and providing 8 assists in 25 appearances this season.

But regardless of who takes over as manager, his time at Old Trafford seems to be over, as senior officials have decided that the dressing room culture needs to be improved.

Sancho, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa, is also unlikely to return.

He had a strained relationship with Amorim’s predecessor Erik ten Hag, first being loaned back to his former club Borussia Dortmund before moving to Chelsea.

Chelsea reached a loan agreement with Man Utd but eventually paid a £5 million compensation fee to abandon the option to buy.

He is currently playing for Villa but has put in underwhelming performances, and Man Utd will look to sell him this summer.

Hojlund moved to Napoli last summer and has since found his form again, scoring 9 goals so far.

If Napoli qualify for the Champions League, they are obligated to sign Hojlund permanently for £38 million.

Hojlund liked a social media post announcing that Darren Fletcher would take over as Man Utd’s manager following Amorim’s sacking.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana – whom Man Utd signed from Inter Milan for £47 million in 2023 – is currently on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor.

The club has no obligation to make his transfer permanent, but Onana’s salary has doubled since moving to Turkey, and he has stated that he is “very happy” playing for the club.
