Germany’s first match, a 7-1 demolition of Curacao, will certainly push a lot of users straight into a “big goals” mindset. But for this one, I don’t want to follow the crowd. Curacao and Ivory Coast are not remotely the same kind of opponent, and Germany’s easy breakthrough last time does not mean they can create a flood of goals in the same way here.
The tone of Ivory Coast’s opening match was very clear: strong physical battles in midfield, compact defensive positioning, quick recovery when dropping back, and real punch in transition. They will not give Germany the kind of comfortable, repeated progression a weak side would. Germany will most likely still have more possession, but possession does not automatically translate into high-quality chances, especially against a team with this level of physicality and defensive discipline.
For this match, I’m more inclined to see it as a “strong team against strong team” test in a World Cup group-stage setting. Germany should win, but they won’t recklessly pile forward; Ivory Coast also know that if they lose control too early, the whole group qualification picture becomes very difficult. Both sides will have attacking moments, but the game tempo may not open up.
My read: Germany’s side is understandable, but on the over/under, I’d rather lean under. The market sentiment created by last match’s 7-1 is too strong, and the actual structure of this game is nowhere near that wild.
