Manchester United officially announced that Ruben Amorim has stepped down from his position as the club's manager, with Darren Fletcher named as the interim boss.

Michael Carrick is open to the idea of returning to Manchester United in the capacity of interim manager. The Old Trafford legend briefly stepped into the caretaker role back in 2018 following Jose Mourinho’s sacking, before going on to take charge of Middlesbrough. As of now, United have not made contact with him, with the club still evaluating candidates for the short-term replacement of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick spent more than a decade at Manchester United, clinching every major domestic honour in England as well as the Champions League and Europa League titles. During his illustrious career at Old Trafford, he made 464 appearances and lifted five Premier League trophies. United also handed him his first taste of management in 2021, when he oversaw three games as interim boss, registering an unbeaten record of two wins and one draw. Ralf Rangnick was subsequently appointed as interim manager until the end of the 2021/22 season.

Amorim was dismissed on Monday, less than 24 hours after launching a stunning attack on the club’s hierarchy in a press conference. Another United legend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has also stated his willingness to offer his services. The Treble-winning hero managed United for nearly three years from December 2018 to November 2021. Sources told Camel Live that the team’s players, including captain Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, would welcome the Norwegian’s return.
United’s hierarchy believe that by waiting until the summer to appoint a permanent new manager, they will have a wider pool of candidates to choose from, with potential targets including Oliver Glasner, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi.

Amorim took the reins at Old Trafford in October 2024, hailed at the time as one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe. However, his tenure lasted just 14 months, and he set the record for the lowest win rate (32%) of any United manager in the Premier League era.

Amorim’s public criticism of the players was one of the reasons for his dismissal. His negative attitude towards academy graduates also raised concerns. Another contributing factor was his stubborn adherence to the 3-4-2-1 formation. Tensions reached a boiling point after he clashed fiercely with technical director Jason Wilcox following the 1-1 draw against Wolves, and his explosive press conference after the stalemate with Leeds United proved to be the final straw.
