First up, the Swiss. They’re playing right here on home soil in Vancouver, with no travel and fresh legs, and they just snapped that 88-year knockout-stage win drought by beating Algeria 2-0 in the last round. They’re extremely well organized defensively — Xhaka controls the midfield, and Akanji is rock solid at the back. That young man Manzambi has been on fire too, with three goals and two assists already in this tournament. The thing is, they’re methodical, not flashy. They grind out results; they don’t blow teams away. Now for Colombia. They finished top of Group K ahead of Portugal, which is seriously impressive. Luis Diaz is an absolute nightmare on the wing, James Rodriguez still pulls the strings in midfield, and their defense conceded just one goal throughout the entire group stage. But they took a big blow in the last game — their starting striker Cordoba got injured and is out for the rest of the tournament. On top of that, they’ve been bouncing between Mexico and different U.S. cities this whole time, so the travel has to be taking its toll. Colombia won the only World Cup meeting between these two back in 1994, and they have the better attacking players. But this is going to be tight, really tight. I don’t see either side winning by more than one goal. Colombia have enough quality to nick this or at least keep it level, so I’m taking Colombia -0.25 on the handicap.
