Messi: Won Everything at Barcelona, But Faced Insults When Underperforming for the National Team

Lionel Messi recently gave an exclusive interview, during which he talked about his family’s support.

Unmatched popularity and its impact on daily life

Messi: “I often say that I try to be true to myself and face every day as I am. There’s no need to pretend or put on a show, nor to care about the discussions or rumors around me.
“I have my own personality; this is who I am and how I live my life. I am very protective of my circle, my family, and my friends.”

Returning to his hometown in leisure time is always a top priority

Messi: “For me, the most wonderful thing is returning to Rosario for vacation in December and spending the holidays with relatives and friends. I have done this throughout my entire career—December is the month to go back to Argentina.”

The "dispute" with Guardiola over returning home during his time at Barcelona

Messi: “There were so-called 'disputes' with Guardiola because many times he didn’t agree or the schedule didn’t allow it. But he always understood me and would eventually approve my trip. It was like a charger for me.
“When I returned, I would always be filled with more motivation because I had enjoyed what my heart desired: going back to Rosario and being with my loved ones. Today, I still arrange my life this way: taking the kids to school, attending training, practicing with the kids in the afternoon—living a very ordinary, family-centered life.”

Family support in the face of criticism

Messi: “Family is my most precious treasure. They have always been by my side, and we went through difficult times with the national team together.
“They even suffered more than I did. At Barcelona, we won everything, but when I underperformed for the national team, I would face insults. Some people said I lacked affection for the jersey and that I should retire from the national team. Meanwhile, my family stayed in Argentina and were forced to watch all the sports programs—you know, people can be a bit masochistic sometimes. My parents and brothers endured a lot. I am lucky to always have a united family, and Antonella’s family is the same. I cherish the time I spend with them every day because this is ultimately the most important thing in life.”
