Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany attended the pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Hamburg.
On his expectations for Bayern vs. Hamburg
We are always favored at home. Of course, every game carries risks. Merlin Polzin and I have nothing to do with what happened in the past (the historical ties between Bayern and Hamburg).
Hamburg has built up a lot of confidence through promotion. That’s always dangerous. But I’ve always thought it’s a good thing for teams from Munich and Hamburg to play against each other. Both cities are beautiful, and there’s a specific tradition behind this rivalry.
On his past experience at Hamburg
Yes, I still remember that game. After that match, I decided to leave Hamburg. In 2008, when the Olympic Games were held in China, Hamburg asked me to return to Germany—and then I ended up sitting on the bench in Munich.
I was so angry! My national team reached the semi-finals, but I was barred from playing. In principle, that was unacceptable to me. But only one person at the club made sure all that happened. Later, at Munich Airport, I said that on principle, I had to do something else.
Beyond that, I’m very grateful for everything Hamburg did for me. My father also tried to persuade me to stay. But I wanted to leave on principle, so I went to Manchester City.
On Hamburg’s poor historical record against Bayern Munich
We are eager to win this game against Hamburg, just like we are for any other game. We’re playing at home, and that’s our advantage. No matter what kind of game it is, we have to give our all. We play for Bayern Munich! That’s my expectation.
On new signing Nicolas Jackson
The start of the season is very important for him because he didn’t get sufficient pre-season preparations at Chelsea.
He’s an excellent athlete and will soon be back to 100% fitness. We’ll have to wait and see when he can start a game. Everything I’ve seen so far is good. He’s a very talented young player. His pace and attacking awareness will pose a huge threat to opponents.
On this season’s squad
I have said from the very beginning that I have 100% confidence in our current players. Most importantly, I am happy to select and use any of them.
I have 100% confidence in all the players. This also applies to the players currently sidelined by injuries. Our attacking lineup has always been very flexible, which I think is a good thing. For that reason, Nicolas Jackson’s ability makes him the perfect fit. That’s also why he will play an important role this season.
