After England beat Norway to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals, Thomas Tuchel stated that he was not fully satisfied with the team’s performance and admitted the side was fortunate to secure the victory. When reporters tried to prompt questions regarding the team’s mental state, Tuchel repeatedly denied any issues and kept praising his players for their outstanding mentality.

Subsequently, British media took Tuchel’s remarks out of context and questioned several England players with distorted statements.

Reporter to Jude Bellingham: “The coach has criticised your performance in this match...”

Jude Bellingham has scored five to six goals in his stellar World Cup campaign, yet his views on the game differed from his manager’s. Asked whether the criticism was justified, he said: “Perhaps. But maybe he does not understand what it is like to play against players like Erling

Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Nusa and Alexander Sørloth under those match conditions. That is by no means an easy team to play against. So I believe we have been building a positive atmosphere and need to keep it up ahead of the semi-finals. I have nothing but praise for the lads. You cannot win every game with fluent possession play and thousands of passes; sometimes you have to win ugly, and we did that again tonight.”

Upon learning about his key player’s comments, Thomas Tuchel moved quickly to defuse tensions: “No one can deny how impressed I am by their efforts, fighting spirit, drive and belief. Overcoming adversity, grinding out results and finding a way to win represents the highest level of performance. They deserve immense credit. However, as a coach, I still believe we can play better.”

Reporter to Madueke: “The coach said you were lucky to win this game. Do you agree?”

Madueke: “Did our coach really say that? That is clearly his opinion, but I do not agree with it.”

Meanwhile, Harry Kane avoided falling into the reporters’ trap. “When he watches our training sessions, sees our chemistry and understands what we are capable of, especially with the quality players we have — our attacking patterns, one-on-one ability and individual technique — he simply wants us to deliver our best version,” Kane said.

“He knows as well as anyone that football is never straightforward. We face strong opponents and top-quality teams. He is pushing us to bring out our full potential, and we ourselves know we can reach an even higher standard.”

English football fans sparked heated discussions on social media, accusing British media of refusing to see the England national team succeed.

Nevertheless, Football Association officials played down the incident, confirming there were “no issues” between the manager and players. The squad explained that emotions naturally run high after intense knockout matches under time pressure, and Bellingham had not fully understood the complete context of Tuchel’s original remarks.

In fact, Tuchel had not even spoken to his players in the dressing room after the game. In his post-match interview, he passionately defended the team’s mentality and winning desire while honestly admitting there were areas of the performance that disappointed him.

It is widely believed that Tuchel and the players share the same winning mindset. Both are natural competitors and will continue to cooperate closely as they aim to defeat Argentina in the World Cup final held in Atlanta on Wednesday night.
