
Manchester United officially announced that Ruben Amorim has stepped down from his position as the club's manager, with Darren Fletcher named as the interim boss.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hold face-to-face talks with Manchester United this Saturday to discuss the possibility of returning to the club as interim manager until the end of the season.
It has been more than seven years since Solskjaer first took charge of Man Utd as interim manager in December 2018, replacing Jose Mourinho.
The 52-year-old coach hopes to convince Man Utd to appoint him once again, as the club is seeking a temporary replacement for Ruben Amorim.
Sources confirm that Solskjaer’s main rival, Michael Carrick, held talks with Man Utd officials on Thursday and outlined his plan to take over the team and lead them through the next five months. Amorim was sacked last Monday morning.
The 44-year-old Carrick once served as a first-team coach alongside Kieran McKenna under Solskjaer, and took over as interim manager for three games after Solskjaer’s dismissal in November 2021.
The former Man Utd midfielder has been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough last June, when he failed to guide the Teesside club to the Championship play-offs.
Solskjaer has already had an informal remote conversation with Man Utd officials, but has not met them in person yet.
On Thursday, he travelled to Molde to attend the funeral of his close friend Aage Hareide, the former Norway national team manager. Since leaving Man Utd, his only coaching role was a seven-month spell at Besiktas, until he was sacked by the Turkish club last August.
72 hours before Amorim’s official dismissal, Man Utd football director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada were strongly criticised by Amorim during a heated meeting. Now, they face a crucial decision as the club is striving to secure a return to European competition this season.
Man Utd are currently seventh in the Premier League table, having set a target of finishing at least sixth last summer. Despite drawing three consecutive games against relegation-threatened teams in the past 10 days, they still retain hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
Darren Fletcher served as interim manager for the 2-2 away draw against Burnley on Wednesday and will continue to take charge of the team for the FA Cup third round home clash against Brighton on Saturday.
Fletcher has remained tight-lipped about his future, but it is believed that he, along with Carrick and Solskjaer, hopes to take on the interim manager role until the end of the season.
