Manchester United have decided to appoint Michael Carrick as caretaker manager—after some key players rejected the return of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Michael Carrick has emerged as the frontrunner for Manchester United’s caretaker manager role, with the club set to make a decision within the next 48 hours on an appointment that will run until the end of the season.

After watching United lose to Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, the Old Trafford hierarchy refocused their attention on finding a successor to Ruben Amorim.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who managed United for three years, is also under consideration. The club held further talks separately with Carrick and the Norwegian over the weekend.

Carrick, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford and briefly served as caretaker manager in 2021, impressed the senior officials with his performance during the interview.

Senior United insiders insisted on Sunday evening that nothing had been finalized yet, but sources now believe the 44-year-old Carrick has pulled ahead of Solskjaer and is poised to get the job.
