Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has officially launched contract extension negotiations with Ousmane Dembélé. However, the club’s initial offer has failed to meet the player’s expectations, and Dembélé is expected to turn down the contract.
In the just-concluded 2024-25 season, Dembélé enjoyed the most glorious year of his career. He not only claimed individual top honors including the Ballon d’Or, FIFA Best Men’s Player and UEFA Champions League Best Player, but also helped PSG secure the club’s first-ever Champions League trophy as a core player. Against this backdrop, PSG naturally hopes to lock in the future of this title-winning key player as soon as possible.

In recent years, PSG has been pushing forward contract extension talks with several key players, but it still adheres to a relatively restrained salary structure, namely a low proportion of fixed salary and greater reliance on performance-based bonuses. Previously, a similar strategy failed to persuade Gianluigi Donnarumma to renew his contract, leading to the goalkeeper leaving the club to join Manchester City after negotiations broke down. Dembélé has also received the first contract extension offer submitted by PSG.

This initial offer is clearly unsatisfactory to Dembélé’s camp. PSG has offered an annual salary of around €30 million, but Dembélé’s team’s psychological expectation is nearly double this figure, resulting in a huge gap between the two sides on salary terms. Dembélé’s current contract does not expire until 2028, so there is no urgent time pressure for the negotiations, but the possibility of reaching an agreement in the short term is not high.

Last October, after returning from injury, Dembélé briefly talked about his future: “I feel good and my form is gradually getting back. As long as I still have the desire to win, I will stay at Paris. I was happy to score in my 100th appearance for the club and hope to keep this momentum going.” Last November, his competitive form was once affected by injuries, and the club used him extra cautiously to prevent a recurrence of the injury.

Since entering 2026, Dembélé has gradually returned to consistent appearances. He started in the match against Paris FC last week; then he continued to start in the Trophée des Champions clash against Marseille yesterday, scoring a brilliant chip goal to open the scoring for the team. Next, he hopes to maintain a high level of performance in the second half of the season, and whether his future can be long-term tied to PSG still depends on the game of negotiations between the two sides in the follow-up.
