Manchester United officially announced that Ruben Amorim has stepped down from his position as the club's manager, with Darren Fletcher named as the interim boss.

Michael Carrick is garnering growing support within Manchester United and is poised to take on the role of caretaker manager. The former midfielder has secured significant backing from the current squad.

Manchester United hopes to confirm the appointment of a caretaker manager within the next 48 hours, who will lead the team until the end of the season. Both Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have held talks with the club’s hierarchy over the position. Sources told Camel Live on Sunday evening that the final decision on the candidate has not been made yet. The new caretaker manager will replace Darren Fletcher—a former United midfielder who took temporary charge of two matches after manager Ruben Amorim was sacked on Monday, but failed to secure a win in either game.

With Chief Executive Officer Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox holding meetings with Carrick and Solskjaer in recent days, the club is expected to make the appointment early this week, allowing the new coach ample time to prepare for the Premier League blockbuster against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The former England international made 464 appearances for Manchester United between 2006 and 2018, having been signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Tottenham Hotspur. He has been out of work since being dismissed by Championship club Middlesbrough last June. During his two-and-a-half-year tenure at Middlesbrough, he led the team to the Championship play-offs in the 2022-23 season, but suffered a narrow defeat to Coventry City in the semi-finals. His side then missed out on the top six by slim margins in two consecutive seasons, which ultimately led to his dismissal.

Born in Wallsend, Carrick has less managerial experience than Solskjaer, with his only formal head-coaching role being at Middlesbrough. After ending his illustrious playing career at Old Trafford, he immediately joined José Mourinho’s coaching staff at Manchester United at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Sources stated that Carrick’s personal charm and coaching ability left a deep impression on senior players during his time at Manchester United, and the former England midfielder has also become the preferred choice of some key squad members. Sources in Norway told Camel Live that Solskjaer’s camp still holds confidence in securing the appointment, but Carrick’s high level of support within the club has given him a slight edge in the competition.
